The Chupacabra

LEGEND
The Chupacabra isn’t just a bloodsucker. In Southwestern legends, especially along the old ranchlands and border roads, it was spoken of as something far worse than a beast — a sneaking trickster, a predator that doesn’t strike with brute force, but with patience.
It doesn’t chase. It waits.
It knows where a person is weakest. It hides in the brush and shadows, slipping closer only when the victim trusts their own illusions the most.
Old tales say the Chupacabra appears where there is too much deception — where lies are thick in the air, where people build traps from fear, half-truths, and self-denial. Its eyes see what a person refuses to admit. Its claws are the sharp consequences of ignoring what is obvious.
Its presence always carries the same warning:
“Look closer. You’re being deceived — or you’re deceiving yourself.”
It is a test of vigilance — the ability to tell truth from illusion, reality from shadow.
CARD MEANING
UPRIGHT POSITION
Short meaning:
Deception, trickery, danger nearby, distorted perception, hidden threat, need for insight.
Extended meaning:
In the upright position, the Chupacabra symbolizes a situation where someone or something acts cunningly, secretly, trying to take advantage of your inattentiveness or trust. It’s a warning about fraud, manipulation, or illusions in which you willingly believe. The card says:
— You see only part of the truth;
— You ignore important signals;
— A cunning force is nearby, seeking your weakness;
— Don’t trust what seems attractive right now.
The Chupacabra requires awakening of intuition. What seems safe or logical may be a trap.
In relationships — insincerity, hidden motives, manipulation.
At work — unreliable partners, hidden risks, invisible traps.
This card calls you:
“Open your eyes and carefully observe who or what stands nearby.”
REVERSED POSITION
Short meaning:
Honesty, transparency, clarity, exposure of deception, revealing the truth, and absence of hidden threats.
Extended meaning:
In the reversed position, the Chupacabra becomes a symbol of purification from lies and fears. Here, cunning loses its power, and deception loses its control. What was hidden becomes visible. What misled you no longer affects decisions.
This is a card of insight:
— You see reality clearly;
— No more shadows that frighten;
— Manipulations or plots are revealed or will soon be revealed.
In relationships — honesty, openness, and uncovering hidden motives that no longer threaten you.
At work — safe agreements, clear conditions, understanding the true state of affairs.
This card says:
“The truth has finally come out, or will soon reveal itself to you. You’re protected by clarity.”
